I worked through it plus all the exercises and felt like a I had a grounding in most of the fundamentals. The 1.9 API docs are also helpful. David Black's 'The Well -Grounded Rubyist' has a nice section on Enumerators. I've programmed Ruby (not Rails) for three years and have read both the Pickaxe (versions 1 and 2) and The Well-Grounded Rubyist. It's been a busy few days, with the release of not my Ruby 1.9 Envycasts but also the PDF version of my new book The Well-Grounded Rubyist. The trail map said to go with Try Ruby, Learn Ruby the Hard Way, The Well-Grounded Rubyist, Ruby Koans, and Chapter 23-24 of the Pickaxe. It covers Rails, Ruby, Git, Heroku and a bunch of other stuff. Programming Ruby 1.9: http://amzn.com/1934356085 - The newest version of the first successful English book on Ruby. Reading David A Black book called The Well Grounded Rubyist and Robert Martin well known as “Uncle Bob” book called Clean Code, A handbook of Agile Software Craftmanship has helped enormously. The begin..end pair are not needed in a method definition. To know more about Ruby, go to the Internet, see documentation, post in Ruby forums, try getting professional books like Pickaxe and Well Grounded Rubyists and Ruby (Beginners guide) from Apress. I'm currently reading through The Well-Grounded Rubyist. I personally like the latter better.
